The Schalke skipper has admitted that he has had a fair share of injury problems in the season ended and is now working on his fitness.
Howedes missed most part of the previous season through injury and is targeting an injury free campaign in the next season. The player has been unfortunate with injuries and his returns have not been as successful as they must
have been.
The defender claimed that he has been unlucky throughout the season and is looking forward to an injury free campaign next term. The player insisted that he has never been used to injuries in his career and this season was definitely
a setback for him.
The Schalke man rued missed games in the season ended which has certainly affected his fitness and has put a question mark on his inclusion in the German squad. He admitted that it was difficult to see the team play from the sidelines
after being named the captain at the start of the season.
“I had an incredible amount of bad luck with injuries, including a broken cheekbone, a torn thigh muscle, a torn ankle ligament and a viral infection. I’m not used to it, as I was never very prone to injury. This season everything
happened at once so hopefully I’ve had my share of injuries now. I missed a lot of games I’d have liked to have played in,” he was quoted as saying in an interview to the club’s official website.
On the other hand, the central defender is hopeful for his chances of being named in the German squad for the European championship later this year. The squad will be named on May 29 and the player has some time to impress Joachim
Low in training.
“I hope I’ll be on board the plane. Since I got the call-up, I’ve really been looking forward to the European Championships and being with the national team,” he concluded.
Benedikt Howedes has thus far made 110 league appearances for Schalke and has scored seven times in the process. The defender also has seven international caps to his name.
