My son is 3 and has some behavior problems. He is constantly moving, hitting, biting, calling names and so forth. We have been seeing a counsler but I feel like we arent going anywhere with her...I need help and answers. Anyway, I dont want to resort to medication unless we have too. I have been reading and see a lot about omega 3 for kids with ADD and ADHD. Has anyone tried this and had success?

  1. I work with a second grader who's mother tried it and found some success.  He has attention deficit and is very fidgety and distractible.  However, there is no research to support it's effectiveness yet.  If you are concerned with your child's level of attention and activity, I would strongly suggest having him seen for a neuropsychological assessment to get a sense of his learning and attention profile.  If he does have ADD, there are supports such as structure in his learning environment, and accommodations at school that can help in addition to just medication alone.  You also want to make sure that there are no other factors involved in his behavior. Sometimes a difficulty with learning or communicating can contribute to difficulty with attention.

  2. It sounds like your daughter has concomitant problems.  I sell medication for ADHD so I am very aware of the disease state.  40% of people with ADD have ODD ( Oppositional Defiant Disorder) as well.  The hitting and biting and name calling isn't just ADD and in girls ADD usually only shows up as attention issues and not the "hyperactivity" issues.

In my opinion and knowing what I know about the disease state, you need to look into getting medication for your daughter.  The reason is that if you don't get this under control she will see herself as "this person" and she will develop her self image from it.  If she has a hard time making friends it will effect her, if she has a hard time learning she will think she is "dumb"...the sooner you can get her help the better.  I know she is only 3 but often times it is hard to distinguish between bi polar disorder and ADD, the bi polar child is usually mean and intentional where the ADD child is clumsy and "accidental".
