Question:

Benefits on FAFSA of getting married?

I'm seriously considering getting married to qualify for more federal financial aid, and I'd like to know what I can expect. As of now, I'm considered dependent, and my family's income is roughly $50k, and hence i only qualify for State-funded work study. If I get married, between my spouse and I we make about $12k. I'm assuming this would qualify me for more assistance?

Before anyone asks, I'm not thinking about getting married just for the money. I've been in a commited relationship for 3 years, and I do love him. This route simply means the difference between having a big expensive wedding a few years later and a wedding at the courthouse in a couple of months.

  2. First of all, in order to be considered independent via marriage, make sure you get married before you file your FAFSA for the year in which you expect to attend and receive aid.

AGI of 12k and 2 in the household... I'm betting you are both in school as well.  That should allow you to qualify for Pell grant funding.  You would also be eligible for Stafford loans as well at the independent student rate.

If you get married and are still living at home with your parents though, be warned that the aid office is likely to still consider the in kind support you receive as a benefit of living with your parents.  This could offset an grant funding you qualify for.  A large part of being independent is proving your own self-reliance.  They are going to want to know how 2 people are living on 12k  year as this is well below the poverty level.
