Benfica's Luisao doubtful for the derby against Sporting Lisbon – Liga Sagres News
Benfica’s Luisao is doubtful for the derby game against Sporting Lisbon after picking up an injury against Manchester United in the UEFA Champions League. The defender is now officially ruled out for the weekend game by coach, Jorge Jesus, who claims that
the extent of his problem is still not known.
Arguably one of the best defenders in the Primeira Liga and a solid rock for Benfica’s backline over the years, Luisao, has become a legend at Estadio da Luz due to his consistent performances.
The centre-back has played a pivotal role for the Reds ever since his move from http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Cruzeiro-c38870 and shows no signs of slowing down. Having become a regular feature for the Lisbon outfit, the Selecao International has also been handed the captaincy at the helm.
Being an inspirational skipper, the 30-year-old stirred everyone around him and remains one of the club’s best players.
So whenever Benfica are without his services, they are sure to struggle defensively as there is no one to marshal the team and lead the players forward. The same case is expected this weekend, when http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Jorge-c19120 Jesus’ side take on arch-rivals, Sporting Lisbon.
One of the biggest derbies in http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Portugal-c2984 takes place this weekend but unluckily for the Eagles, Luisao has been ruled out of the match by the coach after picking up an injury in last night’s UEFA Champions League tie at Old Trafford.
Speaking to reporters, the trainer said that although the full details of the Brazilian’s physical problems were not known but he will surely be out for this weekend’s derby.
"I do not yet know the gravity of his injury, but from what I have learned, he will be unavailable for the derby,” he said.
The tactician also added that Europe’s biggest competition has always been a feisty affair and he was lucky to have escaped with only one player on the sidelines.
"In the Champions League, the intensity is very high and it normally leaves physical problems. Luckily, it was only Luisao; I hope there will not be any more fitness worries, even though Nicolas Gaitan also left the field in pain,” Jorge Jesus was quoted.
Benfica now take on Sporting Lisbon on the 27th of November at Estadio da Luz.
