Portuguese side Benfica have reportedly rejected Deportivo La Coruna’s proposal for Joan Capdevila despite his unwanted status at the club.
From being a World-Cup winner with http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Joan-Capdevila-c18631.
Once amongst the most highly rated full-backs in the world, his form has dropped to a below-par level and he hasn’t been able to cut the grade at Estadio da Luz.
Signed from Villarreal, the player was expected to be a replacement for http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Fabio-c13152 Coentrao but has come nowhere near the standards of the Portuguese International.
His downfall at the helm started with his failure to register his documents on time, which caused his unnecessary exit from the club’s UEFA Champions League squad. Game time was already limited for the veteran defender and with http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Emerson-c12442 taking great strides in his development; Capdevila has been mostly restricted to filling in during less important Cup ties.
With his situation, his agent revealed that his client must sign for a new club in January, so that he could get his career back on track as soon as possible. The advisor also revealed that he had an agreement with Benfica that if an offer came in for the left-back they would not hesitate in letting him go.
Espanyol were reported to be on the trail of the Spanish International, however the La Liga outfit did not follow up on their interest and lodged no official bid for the player.
While they have since turned their attention to other targets, Deportivo La Coruna contacted the Lisbon giants and made a proposal for Capdevila’s services. However in a surprising turn of events, the club refused to let the player leave.
According to a statement made by the Turks, they had contacted their Portuguese counterparts over a potential transfer and despite holding significant talks with the 33-year-old, the Eagles rebuffed the offer.
"A few weeks ago, Deportivo became interested in the situation of former Depor player Joan Capdevila. There was a willingness to reach an agreement between the player and club. However, Benfica announced that they will not let Capdevila leave this winter,” an official statement read.
Capdevila’s fortunes at the Stadium of Light are quite bleak and since he has been hardly utilized by http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Jorge-c19120 Jesus this term, it is inexplicable why Benfica did not sell him.
Emerson has been preferred by the tactician and reports of the club signing the likes of http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Cristian-Ansaldi-c9499 have refused to go away.
By selling Joan Capdevila, Benfica would have freed up more space for new recruits and could have cut down on their wage bill, but their actions have dumbfounded Deportivo La Coruna and the rest of Europe.
