Bengals’ Terrell Owens Blames Teams’ Bad Performance on Coaches
During “The T. Ocho Show,” Chad Ochocinco asked Terrell Owens about why he thinks the team is having a horrible season, with a 2-11 record for the season.
Owens responded by saying, "I think there's underachieving from the top down. You start with the owner, you start with the coaches. And obviously we as players, we are a product of what the coaches are coaching us throughout the course of the week."
Owens further said, "Of course, we have to go out there and play the game. But in order for us to do what we're allowed to do at the best of our abilities, the coaches have to put the players in the best position."
For most of the season Owens has been quite courteous. He said nothing when he had only one catch last week for 22-yards. He was quite again, when they lost that game to the Pittsburgh Steelers by 16 points. And he was silent even before that when he had
10 catches for 222 yards in a loss to the Cleveland Browns, followed by nine more straight losses.
Over the last couple of weeks, Owens has been implying that the Bengals poor season is a result of bad coaching, and were not adjusting very well to opponents’ defenses. But his comments on The T. Ocho Show were his most direct yet.
Owens noted on the show that he signed a deal for only one year with Cincinnati to help the defending AFC North champions progress further in the playoffs, and improve their passing game. He has been doing his part, by ranking in the top six receivers in
the league, but the team’s offence is in leagues bottom three teams.
"Yeah, my frustration pretty much is at an all-time high," Owens said. "I pretty much have been quiet all year, but the fact that I was brought in here to kind of help this team get to the playoffs, and to be where we are right now is very disappointing."
Owens asked Ochocinco the same question, “Why do you think the Bengals are 2-11?”
Owens added that that only the Carolina Panthers are worse at 1-12.
Ochocinco responded, “I'm not sure why we're 2-11 this year. But the thing with me is I've become numb to the situation of losing, being that I've lost for such a long time that I have not been able to point the finger on what it really is."
Owens will become a free agent after the season is over, while Ochocinco can be optioned for one more year. Bengals head coach Marvin Lewis’ contract will also expire at the end of the season.
Even though Cincinnati played horribly this season, they are most likely to get better next season. Will they really play worse? 2-11 is awful, and it really can’t get much worse. Only time will tell, though.
