However, Benitez who guided Liverpool to Champions League glory in 2005 against AC Milan, backed the troubled Spanish striker and hoped that he would soon find his lost touch.
Torres, who was a regular starter at Liverpool, came to Anfield in 2007 from Atletico Madrid for a record club fee. He moved to Chelsea football club in January 2011 on a five and a half year deal for an English record fee of 50 million pounds and hence
became the most expensive Spanish player in history. He is also the sixth most expensive footballer of all time.
In the 142 matches that he played for Liverpool, Torres scored 81 goals for the club including a staggering 33 goals in his debut season, back in 2007/2008.
But his performances so far in his present club have been lacklustre, with him having scored just five goals in 51 appearances. So far he has only managed to score 4 goals during the current season.
“As a striker you know that you need confidence, so I think that he has lost that little bit of confidence, but, talking about the game [against http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Napoli-c40003] he went from the bench and he was working very hard,” Benitez said.
But Benitez believes that the Spanish player won’t take long before he rediscovers his form and was impressed by his performance in the Champions League match against Napoli.
“He knew that his team needed legs, fresh legs, and he was working, he was pressing, he was doing what the manager told him.”
According to Benitez, who has also coached http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Didier-Drogba-c11044, who remains to be the first choice for Chelsea. However, he
advised the striker to remain focused as his time would soon come.
“Drogba is scoring goals and he’s playing well, so then you cannot play…" He added
Even though Torres has been short of scoring goals for his club since his move to Chelsea, he remains an important part of the team which is going through a transition period at the moment. He has been backed by Chelsea’s billionaire owner Roman Abramovich
who believes the player has a big part to play in the club.
Rafa Benitez, who was sacked from Inter Milan after a brief stay at the San Siro, has been reportedly approached by Chelsea following the sacking of Andre Villas Boas. But the 51 year old manager has denied such reports.
