Benjamin Becker ousts Rogerio Dutra Silva to reach round two – Orange Open Guadeloupe 2012
German star, Benjamin Becker, stomped over the Brazilian contender, Rogerio Dutra Silva, in straight sets at the Orange Open Guadeloupe 2012 on Wednesday. He penned down a 6-4, 6-2 victory against the 28-year-old to secure a place in the second round at
this hard court tournament taking place in Le Gosier, Guadeloupe.
The former world number 38, Becker, re-kindled his spark at this ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals) Challenger Tour event and eased past Silva in their first meeting. After overpowering the Brazilian in one hour and 14 minutes, Becker breezed into
the round of 16.
The 30-year-old entered the Stade Lambert Lamby with conviction and held his opening serve. He continued hammering angled shots to pluck remaining serves and capitalised on one out of five break opportunities to pull out the opener with a 6-4 win.
Becker clobbered a lower first serve share of 58 per cent but superbly clinched 13 out of 15 points on it.
Ranked 165th in the South African Airways ATP World Tour Rankings, Becker carried his winning ways in the proceeding set and held his entire serves through tremendous defensive skills. The German warded off both breakpoints he came across to keep
his serves and capitalised on two out of four break chances to manipulate an assuring 6-2 success.
The German produced a much better first serve share of 76 per cent in contrast with Silva’s 57 per cent and availed 15 out of 19 points on it.
Up next for Becker is the French qualifier, Pierre-Hugues Herbert, who stunned the seventh seed, Tatsuma Ito, with a breadstick to set-up this clash. The qualifier flashed in the Guadeloupian hard courts and pulled out the opener with a breadstick. He then
exchanged two serve breaks in the second set before outclassing his rival in the tie-breaker, ultimately sealing the deal with a 6-1, 7-6(5) score line.
Later that day, Gianni Mina outmuscled his qualifying compatriot, Julien Obry, in straight sets in an all-French battle. He kept his entire serves and with the help of a single break of serve, Mina registered a 7-6(4), 7-5 success in an hour and 51-minute
venture.
