Benjamin Starke wins Men’s 100m butterfly: Day six - 2011 German World Championships Selection Trial
SG Neukolln e.V. Berlin’s Benjamin Starke won the gold medal in the Men’s 100m butterfly final, on the sixth day of the 2011 German World Championships Selection Trial.
The championships are a selection trial for the upcoming 2011 Shanghai World Championships, in July.
The 24-year-old Starke secured his spot in the German swimming team after winning the butterfly gold medal. The German swimmer claimed the gold medal with a superb effort of 51.65 seconds. He was 1.09 seconds faster than his fellow swimmer, Steffen Deibler,
who appeared on the podium for the silver medal, clocking 52.74 seconds. They were followed by 19-year-old Philip Heintz, who emerged on the podium for the bronze medal, with a time of 53.07 seconds.
Benjamin stayed 1.83 seconds away from the world record of 49.82 seconds, made by Michael Phelps at the 2009 Rome World Championships. He was also 1.7 seconds slower than the European mark of 49.95 seconds, owned by Milorad Cavic at the same world titles.
In addition, the champion swimmer missed his personal national mark of 51.22 seconds by 0.43 seconds.
Benjamin became prominent for the gold medal in the first lap, where his strong arm-strokes placed him slightly ahead of his following swimmers. He completed his initial lap with a fastest time of 23.71 seconds and stayed 0.18 seconds away from Steffen,
who completed his swim in 23.89 seconds. Deibler was followed by Heintz, who ended his first lap in the third fastest time of 24.86 seconds.
In the next lap, Starke dominated his way towards the finishing wall to claim the Shanghai spot, by completing swim in a time of 27.94 seconds to post 51.65 seconds on the board. Similarly, Deibler ended his second lap in 28.85 seconds to post 52.74 seconds
on the board.
Benjamin’s time ranks first in the 2011 early world ranking, while the German claims to provide more to his fans in future events. He was very happy with his gold achievement and is hopeful that he will make his country proud at the international stage in
Shanghai.
