Benjamin Treffers dominates Men’s 50m backstroke heats – EnergyAustralia Swimming Championships
Benjamin Treffers of Burley Griffin dominated the qualification rounds of Men’s 50m backstroke on seventh day of the 2012 EnergyAustralia Swimming Championships at the South Australia Aquatic and Leisure Centre in Adelaide on Wednesday, March 21.
Treffers made no mistake in the single lap backstroke event and stifled hopes of his challengers by occupying top qualification spot in the semi-final.
With his immaculate struggle, he remained prominently ahead of his strongest challenger, Daniel Arnamnart of SOPAC, and made his way to the finishing end of the pool by clocking a time of 25.23 seconds. The 20-year-old Treffers stayed 1.19 seconds behind
the world mark of 24.04 seconds owned by Liam Tancock of Great Britain from the 2009 Rome World Championships.
The 22-year-old Arnamnart remained 0.71 seconds slower from his former finisher and transpired on the finishing end with the timing of 25.94 seconds. The second position holder was chased by Joshua Beaver of Tigersharks, who suffered a deficit of 0.06 seconds
and earned third qualifying position of the discipline by producing a time of 26.00 seconds.
The 19-year-old Beaver was followed by Andrew Gillespie of Acacia Bayside, who was also 0.06 seconds slower from his foregoing competitor and emerged on the finishing end for fourth position by posting 26.06 seconds.
He remained 0.04 seconds away from Daniel Blackborow of Melbourne, who qualified into the final as fifth fastest finisher with the timing of 26.10 seconds. The sixth fastest spot of the discipline was earned by Max Ackermann of Chandler, who submitted a
time of 26.31 seconds to ensure his place in the playoff.
Subsequently, Jamie Sturgeon of Nudgee Brothers remained slightly slower from his former finisher and posted a time of 26.45 seconds for seventh best position. The 19-year-old Matson Lawson proved his mettle for the eighth qualification spot of the discipline
as he stayed just 0.05 seconds away and posted an effort of 26.50 seconds.
In addition, the session concluded after the completion of all planned events whereas these swimmers will confront each other in the semi-final of 50m event, where the top eight finishers will proceed to the finals.
