Benji Marshall hails Rangi Chase - Rugby League news
While talking to reporters on Tuesday, October 25, New Zealand captain Benji Marshall spoke highly of the brilliant performance shown by Rangi Chase after he joined the English side, which is viewed by many as a betrayal of his home country, New Zealand.
Marshall and Chase share a long history of seven years which started off at high school in Queensland and then both were seen together on-field while playing for West Tigers before they parted ways.
Marshall and Chase had both dreamt of playing for New Zealand, until Chase went ahead with his newly crafted plan of playing for the English side, after figuring out that it was a possible for him through the eligibility criteria.
While speaking about his long time friend, Marshall stated, "I found out through somebody else. He'd be too scared to ring me and tell me that. Coming through school and living together, he was like a little brother to me and he'd always ask me for advice.
I think with the decision he made he might have thought I would have something to say but, at the end of the day, we're best mates and, if that's what he wants to do, that's fine. It's obviously sad that I won't get the chance to play with him for New Zealand.”
Marshall, who will be seen leading the Kiwi side in the fast approaching Gillette Four Nations, also explained that it is about time that things should be taken the grown up way. He went on and added that he is not expecting Chase’s comeback any time soon,
as he is settled down with his long time girl friend, who also happens to be English.
He wished his mate all the best in life ahead and said that he understands that Chase must have evaluated his decision well enough before switching to the English side.
Chase had a problematic childhood which forced him to flee his country to move to England with his Grandparents. While recalling the bad childhood years, Chase himself admits that he is very proud of himself for beating the odds to reach the position he
is on right now.
