Benn Ferriero makes game-winner as San Jose Sharks hold off Boston Bruins 4-2 -NHL Match Update
Boston attempted to make a late comeback into matchup and nearly took over but San Jose’s Ben Ferriero made the game-winner to allow the Sharks to avoid a loss against the Bruins, 4-2, at the sold-out TD Garden in Boston, Massachusetts, United States, on
Saturday, October 22.
Ferriero, a native of Boston, was playing in his second game of the 2011-2012 National Hockey League (NHL) regular season after being recalled by San Jose Sharks from their American Hockey League (AHL) farm club, Worcester Sharks, before his season debut
on Friday against New Jersey Devils.
San Jose Sharks head coach, Todd McLellan, knows how Ferriero can perform and hopes that he will earn a spot in the major league this time around.
"Benn is really growing as a player", McLellan said. "He surprised us last year at training camp. He had a chance to stick around, then he needed some time in the minors. His training camp was good. Didn't quite make it, but in the time between now and then
our team has faltered a little bit. He has got the opportunity and we always said there would be some internal competition and he's made good on it. We're happy for him".
Joe Pavelski kicked off the scoring 1:12 into the first period following a San Jose penalty by Andrew Desjardins, giving the home team a chance to level it up. Luckily, the Sharks killed their penalty and kept the lead.
San Jose’s sensational rookie, Logan Couture, made his first of the season nearly midway through the second to extend the lead, a goal which would be deemed as crucial seeing the situation unfold later on in the match.
Boston nearly took over as Milan Lucic and Tyler Seguin scored back-to-back for the 2011 Stanley Cup champions and levelled up the contest. Benn Ferriero made the game-winner nearly five minutes later followed by Patrick Marleau at the 19:55 mark on an empty
net.
Two games remain on the schedule for Boston in which they will go up against Montreal Canadiens on Thursday and Saturday for back-to-back home and away games.
San Jose will continue its six-game road trip against Nashville Predators on Tuesday hoping to extend their two-game winning streak.
