Tottenham Hotspur defender Benoit Assou-Ekotto has revealed he intends to remain with the London side, despite earlier quotes which hinted otherwise.
The 28-year-old http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Cameroon-c2865 international has been significant for the Spurs this season, playing every single match until he picked up a shoulder injury last month. It was his fine form which led to rumours of his departure in the summer transfer window.
Assou-Ekotto joined Tottenham Hotspur in 2006 and has since then managed to cement his place in the starting XI. He confirmed while speaking to reporters that he would be staying at White Hart Lane, despite claims that he was heading towards an exit in the
summer.
Assou-Ekotto said in an interview:
“I am fully committed to Tottenham Hotspur and proud to represent the club in any match, whatever the competition.
I am very much enjoying my time here. It is a wonderful club with great support and I am looking forward to recovering from my injury in time for next season.”
His shoulder injury against Queens Park http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Rangers-c40314 has left him sidelined for the remainder of the season, but according to the player he expected to return fully fit next season. Assou-Ekotto revealed he was looking forward to playing for the Spurs in the
upcoming season.
There were initially rumours suggesting Assou-Ekotto would leave White Hart Lane if Tottenham Hotspur did not manage to qualify for the UEFA Champions League next season. The Spurs are currently at fourth place on the table with two games remaining in the
Premier League.
According to reports, Assou-Ekotto had a gentleman’s agreement with club chairman http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Daniel-c9879 Levy, which would enable the player to leave for greener pastures if the opportunity arose. He apparently wanted to leave for a club in the UEFA Champions League.
He was reported to have said earlier.
“When I met my chairman last January, he told me that if a club bigger than Tottenham came for me, it (the club) would not necessarily be against a departure.
With my chairman, there was a gentleman's agreement. As he is a man of his word, I hope it will make things easier if a great club comes in.”
