Benoit Paire beats Evgeny Donskoy in first round – Mercedes Cup 2011
22-year-old French, Benoit Paire combated for 127 minutes and finally managed to beat Evgeny Donskoy 6-7(3), 6-4, 6-2 for his 4th win of the year at the TC Weissenhof Court, Stuttgart, Germany.
The first set of the match was the most exciting part as Benoit Paire kept on bouncing back aginst Donskoy. Benoit serving first; had played five aces, zero double faults and Benoit put up a good fight by winning one out of two
break point advantages. Evgeny Donskoy played the match with great enthusiasm and managed to stick it out by winning the set. Although, Donskoy was not able to avail the six other breakpoint advantages he played a superb return game giving him a 1-0 lead against
Benoit. The set was a close duel between both the players.
After taking a beating in the first set, Paire bounced back into the game winning the set 6-4. Paire’s return game was excellent; he managed to win forty two percent of total return points. He was also able to throw two aces, utilized
both breakpoints to his advantage and won ninety percent of his first serve points. Evgeny, other hand, was unable to hit with accuracy and had struck three double faults, out of the four break point opportunities, he was only able to avail one of his breakpoint
advantages and lost the set 6-4 to the Frenchmen.
The third set saw a comprehensive victory for the right handed Frenchman, he managed to win thirteen out of nineteen first serve points along with fifty five percent of second return points. Out of the total four break point opportunities
he availed two and managed to save three break points out of a total of three making it a hundred percent. Although, Donskoy managed to save two out of four break points he was not able to win any break point advantages out of the total three that were presented
to him. He had only fifty four percent of total service points along with thirty five of total return points won. Thus, attaining, a mere forty four percent of the total set points.
In the overall match, Benoit played eight aces, five double faults and won sixty three percent of total service points along with only forty percent of total return points won, thus, giving him a total of hundred and fourteen
match points out of two hundred and eighteen as to his opponent who managed to attain a total of hundred and four match points.
The current world number 126 has not had a great year instead just a few months ago he reached his career high ranking of 98 on 9th of May 2011 and then by the 4th of July he fell thirty places. His last
run was at Wimbledon where he lost in the first round to world number six, David Ferrer
Benoit Paire will be either facing Marcel Granollers (ESP) or Andreas Seppi (ITA) in the next round.
