Benson Henderson granting rematch to Frankie Edgar – UFC News
UFC lightweight champion Benson Henderson is keen on granting former titlist Frankie Edgar yet another chance to regain the title.
Henderson stands with 16 wins and 2 losses in MMA, along with 4 wins and 0 losses in UFC. On the other hand, Edgar stands with 14 wins, 2 losses and 1 tie in MMA, along with 9 wins, 2 losses and 1 tie in UFC. Both of them will lock horns at UFC 150 event,
as announced by Dana White, President of UFC.
Earlier today, Dana White confirmed that Henderson would defend his title against Edgar. He added that the winner would defend his title against Nate Diaz. In this context, it is safe to assume that the winner of Henderson vs. Edgar will not get a third
title shot. If Henderson loses, he will not be able to go for a rematch as Edgar will fight Diaz next.
“We have to get [the division] moving again. It's the unfortunate position that Ben is in,” said White regarding the issue.
UFC 150 will be held on August 11 at the Pepsi Center in Denver. Henderson vs. Edgar will headline the event.
Benson Henderson defeated Frankie Edgar in the main event at UFC 144 last year. Edgar made a prompt rematch claim but it was thumbed down by White. However, considering Edgar’s consistent push for the shot, White finally came give him the opportunity.
“Frankie came to me a million times. This guy has always stepped up, always been there for us, and I felt obligated to return the favor. Ben accepted,” White added.
“If Ben loses, he gets back in line. There's definitely some pressure on Henderson for that fight.”
“I think he should have cut down already, but who knows?" White asked. "He doesn't listen to me. He should. We'll see what happens.”
White believes the rematch between the two will be as thrilling as their first encounter.
“I think the main event is going to be the exact same fight the last one was. Both guys go 100 miles an hour,” claimed White.
For now, White is hoping for the match to be a stunner, in order to get the division back to what it once was.
