New boss http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Paul-c29347 Lambert has said that the Bulgarian will remain the permanent club captain, despite being absent from the side on account of his battle with leukaemia, but he hopes that Bent can step up and lead the team in his absence.
The former Norwich manager is confident in the 28-year old’s ability to lead the team in the absence of their captain.
Bent admitted that it was an honour, to be handed the responsibility of wearing the armband. He said that he wishes to hold on to the captaincy on a permanent basis as he considers it a great honour.
Speaking to the press, the http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/England-c749 international said: "It's a great honour to captain a side like Aston Villa, especially after someone like Stiliyan Petrov, who has been captaining Villa for a lot of years. If I can hang on to it, I'll be delighted, and
that's a big goal of mine."
"The gaffer just said to me 'I've given you the armband for now, and I just want you to justify why I've given it to you’. That's it really, he's not really put too much pressure on me. I want to just try and lead by example and try and be a good role model.
I was captain of Charlton for a year and I enjoyed that and if I get to keep it this year I'll be delighted."
The 28-year old striker started his career with Ipswich Town and has played in a host of English clubs, with Charlton Athletic and Sunderland among them.
Aston Villas spent a record £18 million on Bent as he joined them from North London’s Tottenham Hotspur in 2011.
He is yet to start for the team in the pre-season, after missing the last months of the Premier League campaign on account of an injury.
The player has targeted the friendly against Nottingham Forest as his return game and hopes to make an impact as he wears the armband.
