Van Persie’s admission saw him linked with a lot of big clubs, and there was a lot of speculation linking the player with a move to the Turin outfit. There had been reports that Juve were willing to make Van Persie the highest paid player at the club with
wages reaching 7.5 million Euros to land the Dutch international.
Despite interest from various clubs, Juventus were considered favourites for the signature of the striker and there was heavy speculation that the club were looking to push a deal through. However, there was a hiccup along the way, as the transfer of the
Dutchman hinged on the permission of Arsenal, and Juve could not agree a fee for the Holland international.
The player consequently moved to Manchester United, and Arsenal were paid 22 million pounds for the signature of the striker. Beppe Marotta stressed that they could not afford to break the bank for the former Arsenal player and remarked that they were not
in a position to negotiate a fee and the salary of the striker. He went on to state:
“We had a few objectives on the market and we couldn’t get all of them,” the Turin official stated when asked about his club’s moves. Take Van Persie for example, at this moment in time it was impossible for any Italian club to sign him.”
Marotta said no club could afford the astronomical salaries and transfer fees along with his acquisition and reiterated that the move did not make any financial sense to the board of the club.
