Berdych/Mayer dump Bhupathi/Paes in the second round – Rogers Cup 2011
Another shocker for the tennis fans at the Uniprix Stadium in Montreal, Canada, as the third seeded Indian duo of Mahesh Bhupathi and Leander Paes crashed out of the second round of Rogers Cup doubles, at the hands of the unseeded pair of Tomas Berdych of Czech Republic and Florian Mayer of Germany on Tuesday afternoon.
The contest witnessed some amazing doubles tennis from the two duos, with Berdych and Mayer wrapping up an emphatic straight sets victory at 6-1, 7-6(9), to make a berth in the quarter-final draws of the ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals) Masters Series event. The third seeded pair of Bhupathi and Paes hung in the matchup for merely 69 minutes before submitting the game to the belligerent pair of opponents in the second set.
Bhupathi and Paes took a bit too long to get settled in the game and by the time they got their eye in the matchup, their opponent already bagged the opening set to push them on their back foot. The Indians made a good comeback in the following set and took the game to the wire but eventually succumbed to Berdych and Mayer in the tie breaker round after a stiff contest to lose the matchup.
Berdych and Mayer kept the rallies short and professional, nailing thudding winners between the open cracks between their competitors on regularity. They delivered 68 per cent of their serve on target and secured 32 out of 43 first serve points in the contest to come out as the winner in the end.
The opening set completely belonged to Berdych and Mayer, who dominated every minute of it to exert early pressure upon the Indians. Bhupathi and Paes were extremely sloppy in the opener and their errant stroke play gave their opponents a number of opportunities to take them down. Berdych and Mayer cashed in two out of five break points to close out the opening set at 6-1 and kept their winning momentum in the following set as well.
Bhupathi and Paes finally registered their first serve break of the match in the second set but Berdych and Mayer replied with the same in the very next game to bring them down once again. A regular game was followed which took the second set into the tie breaker round, which was stretched to a total of 20 points. Berdych and Mayer finally closed out victory at 7-6(9), in the decider to get through to the quarter-final draws of Rogers Cup doubles.
