Berdych/Mayer take down the Murray Brothers to reach the semis – Rogers Cup 2011
A convincing victory for the unseeded duo of Tomas Berdych of Czech Republic and Florian Mater of Germany, as the y defeated the British pair of Andy Murray and Jamie Murray in the quarter-final clash of Rogers Cup on Friday afternoon.
The contest took place on the hard courts of the Uniprix Stadium in Montreal, Canada, with the Murray brothers suffering a straight sets defeat 4-6, 4-6, to get disposed of the tournament. Berdych and Mayer took one hour and five minutes of play to seal victory and booked a berth in the semi-final of the ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals) Masters Series event.
The contest appeared pretty evenly poised throughout but it was the brilliant proficiency of Berdych and Mayer to bag crucial points on regularity which made the ultimate difference in the end. The Britons competed very well in the game but their error-ridden game wore them out in the later parts of the matchup. Andy and Jamie conceded a number of unforced errors in the matchup, including seven expensive double faults to assist their opponents to claim victory in the second set.
Berdych and Mayer served very well when needed the most in the game and displayed a rock solid defence to block the attacking manoeuvres from their aggressive opponents. They both tuned up their individual skills to perfection, something which clearly lacked among the Murray Brothers on Friday afternoon.
The opening set took off with an early serve break from Berdych and Mayer, who delivered their 74 per cent of their serve on target and reeled off 16 out of 17 first serve points to get the early advantage. Andy and Jamie failed to recover from the early deficit they suffered by the break point and remained on their back foot for the rest of the set. Berdych and Mayer closed out the opening set at 6-4, to get one up in the matchup.
The Murray Brothers finally cracked in a serve break at the start of the second set but only to be broken in the very next game to fall back once again. A timely break point conversion from Berdych and Mayer proved decisive for them, sealing a comprehensive victory at 6-4 and granting access to the semi-final of the Montreal Masters.
Up next for Berdych and Mayer is the world number one duo of Bob Bryan and Mike Bryan in the semi-finals.
