Berdych/Stepanek, Cabal/Mayer move to the quarterfinals – Western & Southern Open 2011
Berdych/Stepanek beat Lindstedt/Tecau 6-2, 6-7(3), 10-6
Tomas Berdych and Radek Stepanek of Czech Republic rallied past Swedish/Romanian duo of Robert Lindstedt and Horia Tecau, seeded sixth at the event, 6-2, 6-7(3), 10-6 in the round of 16 at the Western and Southern Open in Cincinnati
on Thursday. The match lasted for an hour and 32 minutes.
The Czech team and Lindstedt/Tecau held their serve in the first four games of the first set, taking the score to 2-2. Berdych and Stepanek dominated the proceedings after that as they clinched four games in a row, breaking the
Swedish/Romanian pair in the fifth and seventh game to grab the set 6-2.
Berdych/Stepanek and their opponents did not lose their serve throughout the second set, squaring off the score at 6-6 and taking it to a tie-break. Lindstedt and Tecau played superbly to grab two mini-breaks and capitalised on
them to capture the tie-break 7-3. The Swedish/Romanian pair served very well, delivering seven aces and clinching an incredible 24 of the 27 points on the first serve in the second set.
In the match tie-break, the Czech team hit some aggressive forehand ground strokes and volleys to capture two mini-breaks, winning it 10-6.
Berdych and Stepanek will take on third seeds Mahesh Bhupathi and Leander Paes of India in the quarterfinals.
Cabal/Mayer defeat Melzer/Petzschner 7-5, 7-6(5)
Juan Sebastian Cabal of Colombia and Florian Mayer of Germany prevailed over Jurgen Melzer of Austria and Philipp Petzschner of Germany in straight sets 7-5, 7-6(5) to book their place in the last eight.
Cabal and Mayer came roaring into the match as they broke Melzer and Petzschner in the second and fourth game of the opening set, blazing forward to a 4-0 lead. The Austrian/German pulled back one break of serve in the fifth game
and held their serve in the next game to reduce the trail to 2-4. Melzer and Petzschner claimed the second break back in the ninth game and won their next service game to level the score at 5-5. However, Cabal and Mayer broke once again in the twelfth game
to capture the set 7-5.
The Colombian/German team and Melzer/Petzschner won their service games throughout the second set, squaring off the score at 6-6 to take it to a tie-break. The singles specialists captured a late mini-break to claim the tie-break
7-5. Cabal and Mayer saved all the four break points they faced in the second set.
The unseeded team will meet wild card entrants Alex Bogomolov Jr. and Steve Johnson of USA in the quarterfinals.
