What is the bereavement list? Torii Hunter was just placed on it.

  1. Iceman is right. when something happens to a player's family (death, illness, accidents, etc.) they go on the bereavement list so they can be with their family for an extended time periof without being placed on the DL, and the team can call up a player as needed during that time


  2. I think thats when your team goes below 20 games inder .500. Its bereavement because you don't have a chance in h**l of making the playoffs!! (See San Diego Padres)

  3. The bereavement list is a short-term inactive status list so the player can address personal business, specifically illness or death in his or his spouse's immediate families.

    The minimum bereavement leave is three days, maximum seven. The team may call up a minor leaguer or otherwise maintain a full 25-man roster.

    Players on the "BL" count against the 40-man reserve roster but not the 25-man active roster.

    Bereavement leave is a fairly new thing; IIRC it was enacted in 2002 with the CBA signed at that time.

  4. Family Matters (death in the family) you don't have to put them on the DL, and you can make a roster move for the few days that they are away.
