Bergamo bags second win in a row – 2012 CEV Women’s Champions League
Here is a great news about women’s volleyball team from Italy, the Volley Bergamo, which faced off the Azerbaijani Azerrail Baku in the league round match on Thursday night.
Italian club team did not have a great start in the Prelims of 2012 CEV Champions League and dropped three matches in row. However, the team worked on its flaws and got back on track in the fourth leg competition. Furthermore, they carried the momentum into
next match and added second win to their count.
The match was hosted by the Pala Facchetti in Treviglio, Italy and around 1,000 spectators witnessed the action. Using the home advantage, the Volley Bergamo downed Azerrail Baku in a four-set play, while the set scores were 3-1 (25-23, 25-18, 22-25, 25-21).
With this particular win, the Italians have a fair chance to play in the quarter-finals of the European League.
Elitsa Vasileva of Italy emerged as the real heroin of the match. She staged an eye-catching on the net and received huge applause from local fans. She totalled match-high 28 points and settled for the award of Most Valuable Player (MVP) of the match. Elsewhere,
Quaranta and Nucu added 15 and 14 points, respectively.
The visiting team earned the first point of the game but then trailed behind for better time in the opening set. Italian ladies came up with heavy strike of volleys, which forced Azerrail coach to call an early timeout at 4-1.
As the play resumed, Bergamo continued with success and did not allow guest team to come up. Nevertheless, the visitors managed to shorten the gap 9-8. The Baku team followed coach’s instructions and finally went up on the scoreboard at 18-19. They kept
the lead in hand for a short time before Bergamo bounced back and retook the commanding position. Hosts added quick points and claimed the first set, 25-23.
Second set of the game was all about Volley Bergamo as they led the scores from start to end. Azerrail Baku could not overcome the powerful Bergamo and dropped second set, 18-25.
Ironically, the third set was totally opposite to the previous set. This time, guest team picked up lead and led all the way until the set points, 25-22. Baku started out well in fourth set but Italian came back firing and dismissed guest team with 25-21
victory. The home team pulled off success and sent Baku to their second loss in the league round.
Italian skipper, Francesca Piccinini, disclosed her thoughts after the match and said, “Azerrail played a great match tonight but nevertheless we brought it home quite easily. We showed that as long as we are in a good physical condition we can still play
some excellent Volleyball.”
