I need to respool my spinning reel. I usually get Stren Original in 8, 10, or 12, but I've been wanitng to try something new. I was thinking Berkley Trilene XL smooth casting in 8 or 10. If you've used it please tell me what you think of it. And if you can, compare it to Stren Original. Thanks

  1. In my opinion Trilene is the best mono on the market. Though I use the XT on more of my reels than the XL (because of the the lakes that I fish and type of fishing I do), the XL is still a must on my spinning reels. I stopped using Stren many years ago and there's no comparison. 8-12 lb. test XL will suit you just fine, you may forget about Stren for good!

  2. Its good line, the great thing about fishing is trying new products and ways to fish, however what i think of a good line you might not, so try it for yourself, but I'm sure you will like it, its pretty supple and low in diameter, give it a go, but the stren original is still a good line. I think that you will find the Berkley is a little more supple, unlike the stren which depending on its breaking strain has allot more memory and coils easily.

  3. It is excellent line - several of my spinning reels are loaded with it.  As to its toughness - I was ultralight fishing in a stream near my house, catching rock bass and bream with a #00 Mepps and 4 lb. test line, when I hooked and landed an 8 lb. northern pike.  Tough enough for me.

  4. Everyone of my fresh water reels has Trilene line and the Extra limp is great for lures that need a lot of action or jigs. I think all of the brand names fishing lines are ok and each has it's "special charistics" but I just reach for Trilene because that's what I grew into fishing with.

  5. I have used Trilene XL for almost as many years as it has been around - and that's a lot!! The XL is a thinner diameter, softer monofilament that has a high breaking strength/diameter ratio. It is a very smooth line, and casts very well off all types of reels.

It's only disadvantage is that because of its thinner diameter and soft finish, it does not stand up to abrasion as well as some other lines. But, since I'm not using it for fishing brush or bumping bottom, this factor doesn't come into play for my fishing.

I think it's a great line. They haven't changed the formula for the XL in well over 20 years, and I've been a fan all that time, and until something better comes along.
