Berkshire thump Wiltshire by 130 runs: Minor Counties Championship 2011
Berkshire overcame Wiltshire by a comfortable margin of 130 runs in a three-day match of the Minor Counties Championship, at the Falkland Cricket Club Ground, Wash Common, Newbury in http://www.senore.com/Cricket/England-c56013 on Tuesday, July 12, 2011.
The hosts posted a solid target of 455 runs for the opposition. Wiltshire could only manage 324 runs and were all-out, losing the game by a big margin.
Toss was won by the Berkshire captain, http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Bjorn-Haaken-David-Mordt-c48159, who decided to bat first without any hesitation. The pitch was ideal for batting and the home team made most of the conditions, collecting 370 runs in their first innings.
The start to the Berkshire innings was a good one, as their openers http://www.senore.com/Cricket/David-Edward-Barnes-c52760 put together 78 runs for the first wicket partnership. The latter failed to capitalise on the start he got to his innings and was sent back to the pavilion
after adding 36 runs to the total.
However, http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Roberts-c86287 played well and scored a terrific half-century for his team. He ended up with 53 runs in his impressive knock.
There were also some solid performances from the home team’s middle-order, as three batsmen took their score past fifty. The team’s captain was the highest scorer with 81 runs whereas http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Steven-Paul-Naylor-c91341 collected 63 and 67 in their respective
outings.
The innings was declared at 370 for the loss of eight wickets. http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Tahir-Afridi-c92586 was the stand out performer for the visitors, as he took a five wicket haul in the innings.
Wiltshire’s batting failed miserably and the team was restricted to 211 runs in their first innings, giving a huge lead to the opposition.
Only three batsmen in the visitors’ innings managed to reach double figures, but the star of the innings was opening batsman http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Jayden-Ross-Levitt-c66695, who top scored the innings with 115 runs.
Levitt lacked support from the other end though, as there was no other batsman in the innings to make a significant impression. He carried his bat until the end, as the rest of the team was sent back to the hut.
http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Shaun-Udal-c2505 took three wickets apiece for Berkshire to hurt the opposition badly.
The hosts were in commanding position and made most of the solid lead they had gained after the first innings. They collected 295 runs for the loss of three wickets in their second outing before making the declaration.
http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Jonathan-James-McLean-c69126 was impressive this time around, scoring an unbeaten 139 runs for his side. He missed-out in the first innings, getting out for a duck, but made most of the second opportunity.
Afridi was once again the only bowlers for Wiltshire to cause a few problems for the opposition, as he took two wickets in the innings.
Wiltshire’s second innings was much better compared to the first one, as they managed to score more than 300. However, it was not enough for them to win the match.
Levitt was once again the top scorer for his team, scoring 61 runs at the top of the order. No other batsmen in the team were able to take his score past fifty and the entire team was cleaned up for 324 in the end.
