Berlin Berlin stuns rivals to claim IDEE 113th Hansa-Preis – Horseracing news
Berlin Berlin pulled off a huge surprise in the IDEE 113th Hansa-Preis (Group 2) at Hamburg in Germany.
There were some strong runners lined up for action in the race and the bookies had shown immense faith in the abilities of Girolamo, who was rated as the odds-on favourite to prevail in the all important clash.
However, the three-year-old did not have the speed to fight for the top spot. He had an average start, but there was plenty of time for him to make up, as the overall distance to cover was one mile and four furlongs. He entered the final furlong strongly
and was up to third at that stage, but was out of gas towards the end.
As a result, the favourite colt had to settle for third place, which was not what his team would have wanted from him.
On the other hand, Berlin Berlin gave a spirited performance and did not give up until the final moments of the race, which allowed her to gain the lead overall. She could have settled for the runner up spot, but kept on pressing hard, getting ahead by a
nose distance in the end.
The Markus Klug’s trainee was representing her camp for the fifth time in the sport and this was the second victory of her career. She was successful on debut, but had been struggling to be competitive since then until the IDEE 113th Hansa-Preis.
Other than the victorious filly, Runaway was also quite impressive in the race, as he almost managed to walk away with a win. His jockey Steve Drowne was still pleased with the result and said, “I had the run of the race and missed most of the trouble, but
I thought I was going to win a furlong out and it is a pity to lose it on the nod. However my horse ran a great race and I have to be satisfied with that.”
Runaway has managed to win just a couple of races in his career until now. He has finished as a runner up or in third place on a total of six occasions, which shows that he chokes under pressure, thus needs to build his confidence before appearing in bugger
events.
