Question:

Berlin Sculpture?

I was recently in Berlin and have a few photos of a huge bronze sculpture in the city with two chain-like things coming out the ground connected, but the two link-type parts are not whole. Sort of a "united but divided" kind of thing. Does anyone know the official name for it? Every time I google it I get different results, the most common is that its called plain and simple "Berlin." Does anyone know more about it?

  1. Yep, it's called Berlin and was made for the city's 750 year anniversary in 1987 when it was still divided. The sculpture was made by the sculptor couple Brigitte Matschinsky-Denninghoff and Martin Matschinsky.

  2. It's tough to find information on this piece, but I was able to find this:

The work was made by Martin and Brigitte Matschinsky-Denninghoff.

"[The] celebrated work 'Berlin' was put in place at the Berlin Europa Center on the occasion of the city's 750th anniversary in 1987."

At this point in history, Berlin was still divided by the Berlin Wall, although public opinion was strong, and especially vocal on the Western side, that the Wall should come down.  Two years after the sculpture was made, in 1989, the Wall fell.  I assume that the sculpture is a reference to the unity of the German people despite the obstacles, both tangible (the Wall) and intangible (Communism), that they were faced with.
