Berliner Arthur Abraham collects unanimous win over Polish Piotr Wilczewski – Boxing News
Arthur Abraham, the current WBO European super middleweight champion, did prove that he is a man of his words by successfully defending his newly acquired gold against Piotr Wilczewski, former EBU (European) and WBO Inter-Continental super middleweight champion,
in a 12-round skirmish held on March 31, 2012.
The pay-per-view was promoted by Wilfried Sauerland of Sauerland Event and the ring for the event was stretched at Sparkassen-Arena situated in Kiel, Schleswig-Holstein, Germany.
The Saturday night show was headlined by the Arthur-Piotr bout whereas the EBU (European) light heavyweight championship bout between Eduard Gutknecht and Tony Averlant co-headlined the event.
Arthur, 32, had the upper hand from the very beginning and was defending his European title for the very first time. The Berliner, well known as the ‘King Arthur’, is a knockout pounder who brawls at front foot and stuns his opponents with powerful jabs.
The German proud was entering in his career’s 37th bout and boasted 33 wins, a huge 27 by knockout. Arthur recently came back on the win track after collecting an impressive fifth-round knockout win over surging Pablo Oscar Natalio Farias, a bout in which
he grabbed the vacant European gold.
Before that bout, Abraham faced a depressive unanimous loss to Andre Ward. This was the first time ever that the Berliner appeared in an apex divisional title bout. His Saturday night opponent, Piotr, though possessed an impressive resume yet was not much
experienced when compared to King Arthur.
Widely known as the ‘Wilk’, Piotr has been in a total 32 bouts and emerged victorious in 30. He has collected just 10 wins by knockout and severely relied on his resilience. The 33-year-old Polish recently lost his two titles to James DeGale via majority
decision against him.
Piotr made a comeback in February 2012 by collecting an impressive eight-round split decision win over Geard Ajetovic. But this was not enough since Arthur is a high calibre pugilist with a brutal knockout add-on.
From the very first bell, Arthur had Piotr on his fists and did not allow the Polish even a split second to rest. A continuous session of pummelling rattled Piotr who was about to lose his senses in the 11th round but the bell rang.
After defending his gold by collecting 119-108, 118-109, and 118-109 in his favour, Arthur, said, “He was a tough opponent who could really take a lot of shots. I tried to go for the KO but couldn´t knock him out. But this was a good fight for me, the kind
of fight I need to become world champion again. I am satisfied and will now keep up the hard work to accomplish my goal of winning the world title again.”
Arthur now has 34 wins in his resume out of a total 37 and Piotr, on the contrary, has collected his career’s third loss.
