Bermondsey Bob’s third win in the Freebets.Co.Uk Free Bets Handicap is a crucial collision with Steel Rain’s hat trick
The Class 6 Freebets.Co.Uk Free Bets Handicap has brought together a highly versatile line-up of seventeen, three-year-old and above runners, with two who have won at Chepstow through their most recent attempt, and one who has posted victories over different race courses.
Their accomplishments have made them the centre of attention for the race today.
However, a far more interesting entry for the six furlong and sixteen yard race on Wednesday, 4th July, is the six-year-old bay gelding, Bermondsey Bob.
It is almost as if he was bred and trained for winning this race only, that too year after year. There is hardly much that Trans Island’s gelding has achieved through his racing career besides the Handicap.
The Irish gelding, out of mare Tread Softly, won the Nestle Professional Handicap on 30th June, 2010, at Chepstow over six furlong and sixteen yards.
The victor of the race was prominent throughout, leading the track from the gate to the wire. However, inside the final furlong the six-year-old had to take down the reeling in rivals, Cwmni and Blue Aura.
In partnership with Jack Dean, he won the race by a head’s margin. The leading trio edged past one another at very narrow spots.
A year down the line, the John Spearing trained defended his title in the Mailadoc Hybrid Mail Solutions Handicap on 29th June, 2011 at Chepstow over six furlong and sixteen yards.
He did defend the title, but it was way more challenging than last year, as the race resulted in a dead-heat between Bermondsey Bob and Euroquip Boy.
Both of them took off from the centre, and by the time when there was just a furlong more to go, the two took the final stride in union.
This time the A. A. Campbell owned had Cathy Gannon riding him.
The bay gelding has raced six times during the 2012 season, but has failed to celebrate success yet. His very last race was at Chepstow, where he finished third.
The 6 to 1 entry has been allotted the twelfth gate, out of which he will break with jockey, William Twiston Davies. He will need to look out for Steel Rain, who seems to be in full swing for striking a hat-trick.
