Bermuda Hockey Federation announces a young women squad for the Pan-Am Challenge Cup: Hockey News
The Bermuda Hockey Federation (BHF) announced the women national team that will take part in the Pan-Am Challenge Cup ahead, to be held in Brazil from July 30–August 7. The team comprises more of young players that have a considerable international experience
in hand.
The other teams to take part in this upcoming 2012 Pan-American Cup qualifier round are Chile, Canada, USA and Argentina.
The team’s manager Tracy Stewart said that it was hard to arrange for this expensive trip, considering the economic condition and are still running short of the required budget.
She commented, "Our national women’s team only has a pool of roughly 35 women to choose from when selecting the squad. This is mainly because we receive little or no money to help people stay involved in field hockey, when compared
to sponsorship deals offered by other sports programmes."
As far as sponsorship is concerned, Alterra will be funding for one of the outfits to be worn by the national team.
Due to the high cost of the tour, money was raised by organising events such as running in the Marathon held on May 24, conducting a golf day, selling baked items and hosting competitions in various localities of the island.
Despite of all these efforts, funds are coming up short for which she recommended that if each individual on the island funds one dollar each, the shortfall can be met for the Bermuda team to go represent the island in the international event.
The squad comprises of both experienced as well as fresh talent including the senior players
LaKae Dill as captain, Alex Francis and Erica Furtado that will accompany a fresher Candace DeSilva, who will be playing her first international match.
The other squad members include Latonia Fray, Kirsten Faria, Kristen Rego, Raven Pearman, Yvonna Osborne, Liz Stewart, Iman Smith, Heather Sinclair, Brittany Farias, Ryanne Bardgett, Marcia Ford and Jennifer Chisnall.
This squad will be accompanied by their Manager, Stewart, who will be assisted by Lisete Moniz, Technical Director, Dafydd Hermann-Smith, and the Coach, Paul Deans.
