Question:

Bermuda grass fertilizer

I have read online that it is good to use a slow release fertilizer high in nitrogen. I am afraid of burning my lawn. This is my first home with a yard, so I know nothing about it. Does anyone have any tips or advice on a brand of fertilizer? Is it okay to fertilize in august? It has not been done at all this year. I LIve in Alabama and it is a bermuda grass.

  1. If you are going to do it yourself(which if this is your first time I would recommend having your lawn done professionally)  use Scotts brand fertilizer, there is a 4 step program which tells you exactly what kind of fertilizer and when to put it down.  However if you want the best looking yard you should have Tru Green, Perrennial Green, etc. do it because with a Pesticide liscense they have they are able to get better fertilizers which you can't get without the liscense.

  2. I live in SE Arizona and Bermuda is my favorite.  It really is a very drought tolerant grass and it spreads nicely across the yard...perhaps too nicely.

There are all kinds of good fertilizer out there, from Miracle-Gro lawn fertilizer to Vigoro.  I mix mine in 5-gallon buckets and spread it across the trouble areas.  Lots of rain also keeps this grass thick, lush and green.

You could also apply bone or blood meal to your grass; sprinkle it across the lawn and then water it.

Go ahead and apply fertilizer now.  Your growing season is still three months long and the grass will need the nitrogen to continue growing; as cutting grass stresses out the grass and is forced to grow tall again, only to be cut back once again.
