Bermuda 160/4 v Suriname 41/3 – Duckworth/Lewis method revised target to 50 in 5 overs – Bermuda won by 8 runs
In another thrilling match between Bermuda and Suriname, in the ongoing International Cricket Council (ICC) Americas Region Division One Twenty20, Bermuda won the match by eight runs after the mammoth tally of 160 runs was reduced to 50 runs from five overs due to rain, causing the Duckworth-Lewis Method to come into play.
After winning the toss in the day/night Twenty20 match at Central Broward Regional Park Stadium Turf Ground, Lauderhill, Florida, the Bermudian skipper, http://www.senore.com/Cricket/David-Lloyd-Hemp-c53059, decided to bat first, hoping to post a formidable tally on the board for the opposition to follow.
Coming out to bat with the hero of the match against http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Lionel-Olvin-Bernard-Cann-c72988, Hemp put the foot down on the accelerator right from the word go as both openers clobbered the opposition all around the park, pulverising the Suriname bowlers one by one.
By the 10th over, Bermuda had taken their tally to 93 runs before suffering their first loss of the day in the form of Cann’s wicket, who after clobbering a sensational innings of 63 runs off just 35 deliveries, had his stumps uprooted by a blazing delivery bowled by Sauid Ahmid Drepaul. Before departing, the batsman had done considerable damage by hitting five boundaries and two sixes with a strike rate of 180.00.
Then came the one-down batsman http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Fiqre-Salassie-Crockwell-c57029, who rallied along the skipper to rip the Suriname bowling attack, which clearly looked impotent against the formidable Bermudian batting brigade.
It was then in the 17th over, when Bermuda saw their skipper depart after smacking 50 runs off 46 deliveries. He was caught by the 18-year-old Vishwar Shaw, off a pacy delivery by strike bowler, Troy Anthony Dudnath.
Two deliveries later, Crockwell fell to his demise after getting trapped right in front of stumps by Dudnath. The batsman had no other option but to walk back to the pavilion after adding 20 runs in the total tally. By the time of his wicket, Bermuda had scored 139 runs for the loss of three wickets.
What had been a splendid start by the Bermudians was now falling apart as the batsmen failed to capitalize on the foundation laid by the opening batsmen. On the other hand, Suriname had made a good comeback as they almost looked well out of the match but later managed to strangle the flow of runs with impressive bowling, backed by excellent fielding.
With dark clouds covering the skies, it was Kamau Leverock and http://www.senore.com/Cricket/George-S-Hubert-c59610 O'Brien, who scored 11 and 9 runs respectively, to take their side to a comfortable total at the end of their allotted overs.
Rain then delayed the start of the second innings as the rainy weather of Florida in this time of the year finally showed its might by pouring down on Lauderhill. The rain clearly left the outfield wet and due to the amount of time it had taken, the Duckworth-Lewis Method had to be enforced, making Suriname chase a daunting target of 50 runs in just 5 overs.
With a new tally in their sights, the http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Suriname-c3013 batsman came out in the middle, aiming to clobber almost every delivery that was bolted at them. The Suriname unit needed to score at 10.00 runs per over to get them through the match.
However, the openers failed to give a big boost to their side as the first wicket fell on the second delivery of the second over when O'Brien rammed a delivery right in the stumps of skipper Dudnath when the batsman had scored only four runs off five deliveries.
On the next delivery, one down batsman, Mohindra Boodram, was caught and bowled by O’Brien. The batsman found his way back to the pavilion without nudging the score board.
In the next over, opener Drepaul also lost his wicket by giving a catch to Rodney Jamal Omar Trott, off the bowling of http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Kamau-Leverock-c70105. The batsman departed after scoring just three runs off five deliveries. At the time of his departure, Suriname had scored 14 runs for the loss of three wickets.
With wickets falling fast, Bermuda seemed in a comfortable position to take the game away from Suriname.
It was then the 22-year-old batsman Arun Kamesh Gokoel, who showed off some of his batting talent by smacking 18 runs off 12 deliveries as he helped his side reach a total of 41 runs at the end of the match.
Cann, from Bermuda, was named as the Man of the Match for his astounding innings with the bat.
