Bernard Hopkins pleased after getting his WBC championship belt back – Boxing news
The Executioner, Bernard Hopkins, has been given back his World Boxing Council and The Ring Light Heavyweight championship belt after the WBC on Thursday, October 20, ruled Chad Dawson did not defeat Hopkins
by a technical knockout as they think the outcome was a technical draw. The officials who were working Saturday's fight also agreed with the decision.
The 46-year-old Hopkins, who is also known as B-Hop, mixed it up with Chad ‘Bad’ Dawson last Saturday on October 15, at the Staples Center in Los Angeles, California.
It was a much-anticipated fight but unfortunately it was cut short as it ended up in a storm of controversy. Hopkins tried to hit Dawson with a right but upon missing it he leaned over Dawson. Once this
happened, Dawson lifted Hopkins from his legs and threw him down to the canvas which caused an injury to Hopkins left shoulder.
However, everyone was left flabbergasted when the officiating referee instead of penalising Dawson awarded him with a technical knockout victory. Therefore, Hopkins’ camp appealed the WBC to look into
the matter itself.
Hopkins' promoter, Richard Schaefer of Golden Boy Promotions told the media he is very pleased with WBC’s decision, as he reckons his fighter was robbed.
"I'm obviously thrilled by that decision," Schaefer said. "It's the right decision. Bernard Hopkins did not lose that fight."
Even though it was Hopkins’ first historic title defence, the fight did not produce much money and Schaefer believes it had nothing to do with his fighter. Schaefer stated his team knows how to promote
a fight whereas Dawson and his team needs to learn it.
"Ticket sales and the pay-per-view were poor, and it certainly had nothing to do with Bernard Hopkins," Schaefer said. “I don't need a media guy to tell me how to do a pay-per-view," Schaefer said. "We
tried to sell the fight. Chad Dawson is not as charismatic as he needs to be to sell a pay-per-view. Our team [knows] how to market a pay-per-view. We know what we're doing."
There has not been any rematch announced as of yet by the WBC but let’s see if both fighters get another chance of facing each other in the ring because after what has happened their rematch will certainly
be an explosive one.
