Bernard Hopkins says his career will not finish and he is still the champion – Boxing news
The Executioner, Bernard Hopkins, who is now the former World Boxing Council and The Ring Light Heavyweight champion, has revealed he has no plans to walk away from the sport as the 46-year-old pugilist believes he is still the champion.
Hopkins, who is also known as B-Hop, made his first defence of his historic title against Chad ‘Bad’ Dawson last Saturday on October 15, in Los Angeles, California, but unfortunately the great fight ended up in a storm of controversy.
It was Dawson who lifted and threw Hopkins down on the canvas very smartly in the second round. However, it was not called as a foul by the officiating referee due to which Dawson was awarded a TKO win.
Hopkins told the media he has no reason to leave the sport because Dawson did not beat fairly and he also claimed that he is still the champion.
"I am going to fight again because I'm still the champion," he said. "I believe I will be the champion once the proper channels are being taken."
"My career will not end, and has no reason to end, based on Saturday night," Hopkins said. "For what?"
Hopkins, who now carries a record of winning 52 of his 61 professional fights (2 Draws, 1 no contest), with 34 of his wins coming by the way of a knockout, was also furious with the referee because he thinks it was a no contest rather than a TKO.
"I think the referee got caught up in the moment and didn't know what to do," Hopkins added. "I don't want to sound like I'm whining. The bottom line is, the referee either doesn't know the rules or dropped the ball."
In the meanwhile, the CEO of Golden Boy Promotions, Richard Schaefer, also supported Hopkins.
“It's very clear Chad lifted his legs," Schaefer said.
WBC is looking into the matter and within a week’s time they will give their final decision about the matter and all that is left to see is whether if Hopkins will get a rematch or not.
