Bernard Tomic defeats Rohan Bopanna 6-7, 7-6, 6-4
World number 187 Bernard Tomic of Australia battled past world number 629 Rohan Bopanna of India in three thrilling sets 6-7, 7-6, 6-4 in the first round of the BNP Paribas Open 2011 on Friday.
Both players served very well throughout the match as only one serve was broken during the three set encounter.
Tomic and Bopanna held all their service games in the opening set to take it to a tiebreak. The Indian got the mini-break late in the tiebreak, winning it 7-5.
Bopanna served remarkably well in the first set as he fired in 13 aces in the first set. He hit 58 per cent of the first serves in the opening set, winning a whopping 92 per cent of the points on them.
The proceedings of the second set were not much different from the first set. None of the two players was able to break other’s serve in the second set, taking it to another tiebreak. Tomic outclassed his opponent in the tiebreak to win it 7-1. Both
players saved 100 per cent of the break points they faced in the second set.
In the final set, Tomic needed a single break of serve to win the set 6-4. He hit 3 aces and 68 per cent of the first serves in the deciding set. The Australian converted the only break point he received in the set.
The 18-year-old will meet 16th seeded Viktor Troicki of Serbia in the second round for the duo’s first ever meeting.

Andrey Golubev beats Florian Mayer 6-2, 6-1
Andrey Golubev of Kazakhstan thrashed Florian Mayer of Germany in straight sets 6-2, 6-1 to move to the second round of the championship. The Kazakh took just over 44 minutes to undo his opponent in a one-sided contest.
The 23-year-old broke his opponent twice in the opening set, comfortably winning it 6-2. He hit a single ace and 60 per cent of the first serves in the first set. Golubev did not face a single break point in the opening set. On the other hand, his
opponent could not save any of the two break points.
The second set was again a one-sided affair as Golubev lost just 1 game in the set to win it 6-1. The Kazakh converted both break points he received in the second set. He won 76 per cent of the points in the set.
Golubev is slated to meet world number 3 Novak Djokovic of Serbia in the second round. Djokovic, seeded third at the championship, received a bye in the first round.
