Bernard Tomic, Ryan Sweeting qualify for the second round – Delray Beach International 2012
Bernard Tomic beats Tommy Haas 6-4, 6-3
Eighth seed, Bernard Tomic of Australia, prevailed over former world number two, Tommy Haas, in straight sets 6-4, 6-3 in the first round at the Delray Beach International Tennis Tournament in Florida, USA on Monday. The Australian
took just an hour and 11 minutes to win the match.
Haas was the first to take lead by breaking the Australian in the third game and winning his next serve to go ahead 3-1. However, the German managed to grab only one game after that, losing his serve in the sixth and tenth to drop
the set 4-6.
Tomic served splendidly, bombarding five aces and capturing 14 of the 18 first delivery points in the opener. In comparison, Haas looked off colour, as he committed a couple of double faults and put in just 35 percent of the first
serves.
Haas and Tomic did not face much trouble in holding their serve in the first six games of the second set, evening out the score at 3-3. The Australian allowed Haas to win only one point in the next three games, clinching it 6-3.
Tomic will meet the winner of first round match between Jurgen Melzer of Austria and local Tim Smyczek in the round of 16. Melzer received a direct entry but Smyczek had to qualify for the main draw.
Ryan Sweeting defeats Donald Young 6-1, 6-1
In match between two upcoming local players, world number 82, Ryan Sweeting, upset world number 38, Donald Young, in straight sets 6-1, 6-1 to proceed to the second round. Sweeting crushed his compatriot in just 52 minutes.
Young faced pressure on his serve right from the beginning. The left-hander saved three break points in the first game but failed to do the same on the fourth to trail from the start. The American lost his game again in the fifth
and seventh to hand over the opener to his opponent 1-6.
Sweeting showed no respite to his countryman in the second set. Just like the previous one, the 24-year-old allowed Young to claim only one game, breaking the American twice to seal it 6-1.
The 6ft 5in tall was lucky to win despite hitting five double faults in the match. The American balanced that by clinching 21 of the 23 first serve and 17 of the 21 second return points.
Sweeting is slated to meet either top seed, compatriot John Isner, or wild card entrant Levine Jesse in the second round.
