Aussie teenager, Bernard Tomic, put up an exciting show for his local fans to oust the superior ranked Spaniard, Fernando Verdasco on Monday. Rod Laver arena gave standing ovation to their local hero, who won an emphatic five-setter
with a final scores of 4-6, 6-7(3), 6-4, 6-2, 7-5. It was one of the best ever comeback in the history of the Grand Slam tournament, the Australian Open.
The contest was an extremely close one in the first eight games of the match. It was a treat to watch as both players hung on to their respective serves to take the scores to 4-4. No one was willing to bow out and they met blow-to-blow
in these first eight games; finally the local hero was ousted on his serve that was good enough to round off the first set advantage to the visitor. Verdasco held his serve to take 1-0 set lead.
The Aussie fought back in the next set and delighted the crowd with his initial onslaught. He held her serve and registered a break point in the following game to take a 2-0 lead but his serve was broke in the very next that allowed
the Spaniard to level the score at 2-2 in the fourth game. Both players exchanged serve breaks in the next two games. A cracking neck-to-neck encounter pushed the scores to 6-6, which enforced a tie-break into play. Verdasco once again ousted the youngster
to inch one step closer to the second round berth.
Everyone in the arena thought that it was over but Tomic proved them wrong. No breaks in the first eight games pushed the scores to 4-4. Stunning winners down the line in the ninth game earned a crucial breakpoint to the local
competitor, who took the third set in the next game by holding on to his serve. Tomic continued with the onslaught and broke in the first game of the fourth set. Both players exchanged breaks in the fourth and fifth game that retained the lead of the local
hero. Tomic broke serve again in the seventh game and rounded off the set in the next game with a successful serve game.
Suddenly this triumph brought life to the crowd, as their tennis ace held his serve in the first four serve games; so did his opponent. Tomic broke in the eleventh game of the last set and held his serve to complete a mammoth comeback.
He moves into the second round of the tournament in the most stunning manner expected.
