Bernard Tomic breezes past Tatsuma Ito in the second round – Brisbane International 2012
Aussie tennis ace, Bernard Tomic, easily overpowered the Japanese rival, Tatsuma Ito, in the second round of the Brisbane International tournament on Wednesday. The eighth seeded home favourite completed his hat-trick of triumphs
over the Japanese contestant after losing to him once way back in November 2010. The match lasted for just 44 minutes and Tomic helped himself with a straight set win 6-1, 6-2 to place a berth in the quarter-finals of the ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals)
World Tour 250 event.
Tomic had defeated the Japanese twice in 2011, in Tokyo and Nottingham Challenger. The only loss for the teenager was in Toyota Challenger but not before he tested the 23-years-old Japanese to his limits. With local support and
familiar conditions working in his favour, Tomic just needed to play smart and don’t commit any unforced errors; he exactly played by the plan and bagged an easy win against Ito.
The Aussie started off the match in prolific manner; held his serve and ousted the inferior ranked Japanese with some enthralling winners down the line to seal the first break of the match. He further enhanced his lead by striking
couple of aces in the third game that successfully ended his second serve game. With pressure mounting on the Japanese and crowd roaring for the Aussie, Ito found himself in no man’s land and further lowered his chances of qualifying for the quarter-finals
with two unforced errors.
Leading the set with 4-0 and looking extremely threatening, Tomic moved on to take 5-0 lead and completely dismantled the confidence of his opponent. Ito seemed to have just forgotten the traits of playing tennis and struggled
to generate enough power in his serves to upset Tomic. With just one game to his name, Ito lost the first set and never looked to have settled in the contest.
The beginning of the second set was a complete replication of the first one, as the eighth seed broke his rival’s serve in succession. He held his serves as well and helped himself to a 4-0 lead. Another break in the fifth game
earned him the majestic lead of 5-0. Ito managed to clinch one break in the sixth game and held his serve in the next to take score to 2-5 but he couldn’t swallow the crowd’s roars and lost the match.
Bernard Tomic moves into the quarter-finals and takes on another talented player from Uzbekistan, Denis Istomin. He is definitely all fired up to kick-off the new season with a title to his name and looks forward to his next encounter.
