Bernard Tomic cruises past Denis Istomin into the last four – Brisbane International 2012
First encounter between the two quarter-finalist of Brisbane International tournament, eighth seed Bernard Tomic and Denis Istomin, ended with a straight set 6-3, 7-6(4) triumph for the Aussie teenager, Tomic. It was an exciting
contest that lasted for an hour and 19 minutes. These two players were contesting against one another for the first time so the opening games were played with immense care.
Uzbek Istomin was one of the most exciting players of the tournament and was considered to prolong this match into three sets but his performance was below par yesterday. He couldn’t explore his sublime touch and seemed to have
buried under the pressure of local support for the eighth seed Tomic. Enjoying multiple factors into his favour, Tomic gave no opportunity to his counterpart to settle into the contest and thumped his authority right from the word go.
Aussie started the proceedings with couple of aces in the first game. Uzbek also showed great composure in the first game and he levelled the score at 1-1. Eighth seed struck two more aces in the second serve game and broke in
the next game to take two games lead upfront; score was 3-1 at that stage.
Both players stayed calm in the remaining games of the set and tried to capitalize on their respective serves. With a break down in the first set, Istomin was running out of games to break back and level the score. The see-saw
battle continued and Tomic sealed the first set win with ease. Last point of the first set was greatly cheered by all the attendants in the arena and Tomic waived back to respond them with pleasure.
Second set was an extremely monotonous one, as no one was improvising to take risks and oust his opponent. Both players were playing within themselves and never looked to threaten their opponent. No breaks were seen in the second
set as both players hung on to their respective serves and pushed the score to 6-6.
Istomin was the one that lead the aces tally with five aces to three. Aussie fans were fully supporting their local tennis ace and cheered every point won by him. The things heated up in the arena as the tie breaker was enforced
in the second set. Both players were doing well for the first eight rallies but the local boy turned the tables on his opponent by sneaking the last two points.
Bernard Tomic will go through his toughest tie in the semi-final against the top seed Briton, Andy Murray.
