Bernard Tomic disheartens everyone in 2012 – Tennis Special
Bernard Tomic, the 20-year-old Aussie, entered the limelight after a fantastic run in the Wimbledon Championships 2011 where he ended as the quarter-finalist. By the virtue of that performance, the youngster cruised up in the rankings list and ended the
season as the 42nd ranked player in the world.
A lot of tennis gurus were talking about the new era for the youngster that began in 2011 and expected him to build upon those mind-startling performances. However, the Aussie completely failed in making any sort of impression this year; rather stumbled
apart and faced a whole lot of criticism from his compatriot, teammates and Tennis Federation.
Last year quarter-finalist reflected on his dismal season, “I think the last few months. I have sort of slacked off a little bit and look what it’s costing me. It’s just strange. I mean, like on the way up I have been growing up playing and everything’s
got easy. I’ve gotten to where I have won very easily. It’s amazing. Now you let the foot off the pedal and it’s costing you. It’s something I’ll learn. I’ll wake up and get back to the way I was playing and get back to that training mode to get me to the
Top 15, 20 at the end of the year even.”
Tomic never had a bad start to the season. He smothered some fantastic players in the Brisbane International and reached the semi-final. The reigning US Open Champion, Andy Murray, defeated the youngster but reaching the second last stage in a season-opening
tournament was an impressive start. He impressed the local crowd by winning the AAMI Classic in Kooyong after thumping away the Former American number one, Mardy Fish, in the final.
Everything looked terrific for Tomic. He squeezed three victories at the Australian Open as well; two of the victims were the superior ranked players. He lost to the 17-time Grand Slam Champion, Roger Federer, in the fourth round which was never a disappointment
at all. However, it was the beginning of a frustrating era that forced Tomic out of the Top-50 category by the end of the season.
Banking on the earlier performances, the 20-year-old Aussie shot up to world number 27 in the rankings. However, couldn’t capitalize on the opportunities offered to him and struggled miserable for the rest of the season. He lost in the opening round of nine
tournaments; six of them being consecutive defeats including the Wimbledon upset.
The youngster is planning on improving in 2013. It will be important for him to start well and at least match the performances of 2012 in the tournaments at his home soil.
