Bernard Tomic excited to make his Hopman Cup debut this year – Tennis News
Australia’s number one tennis player, Bernard Tomic, has announced that he will make his Hopman Cup debut at the start of next year. The event will be played at the newly built Perth Arena.
Hopman Cup attracts some of the top players on the men’s and women’s circuit. The event is organized in Australia just before the start of the first Grand Slam of the tennis calendar.
Giving an interview to the media people, Tomic stated, "I can't wait to play against the top players in the world and get guaranteed three matches of a high standard - something great before the Australian Open."
The Australian added, "I think where Davis Cup has helped me is playing the doubles and singles a lot in practice and the opportunity to play mixed doubles is something new for me. I can't wait to get on the court and help Australia
win."
Tomic has won all the three Davis Cup matches he has played for his country in this season. The 19-year-old thrashed the then world number 502, Di Wu, in straight sets 6-4, 7-6(3), 6-3 in Australia versus China first round Davis
Cup tie.
In the second round tie against South Korea, Tomic won both of his singles matches, beating Min-Hyeok Cho and Jung-Woong Na in straight sets.
However, the youngster could not do well for his country at the London Olympics, as he lost to Japan’s Kei Nishikori in straight sets 6-7(4), 6-7(4) in the first round.
Tomic had got into limelight in 2011, after reaching the last-eight stage at the Wimbledon Championships. He had stunned the then world number five, Robin Soderling, in the third round. Though, he could not repeat that performance
this year, losing to Belgium’s David Goffin in the first round.
It was also confirmed that Novak Djokovic and Ana Ivanovic will represent Serbia at the Hopman Cup next year. When these two took part in this event for the last time in 2011, they had qualified for the final but were forced to
release their place due to Ivanovic’s injury.
Tournament organizer, Steve Ayles, said, “For the first time Hopman Cup will truly replicate grand slam playing conditions, making it even more attractive to the world’s best players.”
This year’s Hopman Cup title was captured by Czech Republic, as Tomas Berdych and Petra Kvitova toppled French combination of Marion Bartoli and Richard Gasquet in the final.
