Bernard Tomic explains his stance about the Davis Cup expulsion – Tennis News
World number 52, Bernard Tomic, failed miserably in the season 2012 especially the latter half that witnessed nine opening round exits including the Wimbledon Championships and the US Open.
The authorities created hype of attitude issues relating to the 20-year-old Aussie.
The latest blow for the frustrated youngster arrived a day earlier when he was told that he is not a part of the Davis Cup campaign next year especially in the starting phase of the competition.
Australia is scheduled to contest their first tie in February next year against the Chinese Taipei. Tomic has been told that he will not be included in the squad that will travel to Taiwan to play from February 1 to 3, due to the lack of commitment. The
critics believed that the 20-year-old Queenslander has been axed on attitude issues but he has cleared the air by stating that he knew about the plans of the Pat Rafter, Australia’s Davis Cup team captain.
Tomic spoke to the media representatives of Channel 10 and stated, “I was never meant to play that Davis Cup tie. I spoke to Pat (about that). I'm going to use that time for training and to prepare for tournaments in America. I am working really hard and
trying to push myself to become the best tennis player as I can be, and I've had a slippery slope the last year, and it's changing me. And I'll prove that I'm going to be the best player one day to play this game.”
The Aussie star was ranked 27 in the world in June this year. However, the terrible slump witnessed his ranking to slip drastically and he moved out of the Top-50 players at the end of the season.
More pressure will be on the 2011 Wimbledon quarter-finalist at the start of the new season because he played some marvellous tennis in Australia this year. At Brisbane, he reached the semi-final; won the title at Kooyong and stunned everyone by toppling
two seeded players at the Australian Open before being dumped by the 17-time Grand Slam Champion, Roger Federer, in the fourth round.
