Bernard Tomic eyeing for the "fifth Grand Slam" title at Olympics – Tennis Special
World number 49, Bernard Tomic, commented about the upcoming London Olympics and stated that he would feel blessed to win a gold medal at Wimbledon and that would mean more than winning  Grand Slam title at All England Lawn Tennis
Club.
Tomic thinks about Olympics tournament as the fifth Grand Slam Championship and ranks it higher than all of the rest including the Australian Open, the Roland Garros French Open, Wimbledon Championships and the US Open. There might
be a flock of disagreement from the critics but that is how the 19-year-old Aussie thinks about the Olympics championship and wants to the win the gold medal to give a thrust to his ever depleting form.
Talking about the Olympics campaign, Tomic stated, “You can't put into words what winning a gold medal would mean. For me winning a gold medal is bigger than winning a grand slam. I can only dream of it. It (the Olympics) is like
a fifth grand slam and something I always wanted to do better at than grand slams."
He believes that the format of best of three sets can help some underdogs to boost their chances of reaching the advanced stages of the tournament by upsetting the superior ranked players and probably surprise everyone by grasping
the gold medal as well. It may be highly unlikely but the chances of an upset are definitely greater in three-setter clashes than five-setters.
Tomic further added, “I think the top players favour the best of five. It's more difficult to beat them over a longer period. To beat them in best of three is a better chance so the opportunity is there for a lot of players, including
me."
The Aussie starlet has faced five first round exits in the five successive tournaments after the Roland Garros French Open. It includes, Gerry Weber Open, AEGON International, Wimbledon, Mercedes Cup and Credit Agricole Suisse
Open. He was not top class before the year’s second Grand Slam Championship either. He lasted two rounds in Rome, Nice and French Open whilst couldn’t win a single match at Madrid.
So, the teenager is going through a tough time of his professional career not been able to win the matches on the trot and reach the advanced stages of the tournament. He was ranked 27 in the world in June but wasn’t able to clinch
anything at all since then and is almost on the verge of dropping out of Top-50 players in the world.
However, Tomic do possess quality and stamina. He can be a contender for the gold medal at Olympics but still he needs to instil those superhuman qualities like the Spanish number one, Rafael Nadal, to dismantle the confidence
of the Top-2 ranked players in the world. He needs to discover his best run of form to test the likes of other participants but there is definitely no doubt that he can surprise the top seeded players at any stage.
