Bernard Tomic fishes Mardy out in second round – Shanghai Rolex Masters 2011
The first major upset of the Shanghai Rolex Masters 2011 came when Bernard Tomic, Australian world number 49, thrashed top ranked American, Mardy Fish in their second round match on Tuesday, 11th October. Battling it
out for the 3rd round, Tomic lashed out on the world No.9 bedazzling the American 4-6, 6-1, 6-4 in an hour and 58 minutes.
Playing at Qizhong Forest Sports City Arena, Shanghai, China the 18-year-old shocked the top ranked American with outclassed forehands and equally matched service returns to counter his opponent. Although most of the spectators
were supporting Fish, what they saw next made them change their option.
With the two walking down the court, Tomic already had a loss in the back of his head. Yet he thought of giving a hard time to the top ranked American. Starting off with the fixture, Tomic fired up winning the first game with triple
game point, 1-0. Following the 18-year-old Fish won his opening serve, however, had to save a breakpoint.
With the two battling out hard and fast from the start, both had posed a super strong defence to counteract ones offence. Levelling up again at 2-2 and then on 3-3, Fish fired up his super weapons breaking the 18-year-old and taking
the lead.
Winning game 8, the American world number nine now had a comfortable lead, 5-3, and walked on to serve out one of the last two games bagging the set, 6-4, and moved onto set 2.
With the fans cheering for a final winner set, what they experienced in the stands was the Fish caught in a net. Tomic continued with the second set serving out the first game, 1-0. Levelling up instantly, the world number nine
won game 2, however, could not win another game next.
Tomic went ballistic as he served out game 3 and broke the higher ranked American to lead 3-1. Extending his lead as he served out next, 4-1, the Aussie pulled off another break point swirling away in lead and was now left with
just one more game win to level the match scores, 5-1.
Serving out game 7, Tomic capitalized as he levelled up the match scores winning the second set, 6-1. Losing a shocker, Mardy now went on to level the insult next, however, he presented with something even better, a knockout.
Serving out the first game, Fish rolled down the scoreboard, however, Tomic levelled up at every score, 1-1, 2-2, 3-3 and at 4-4. What was hoped to end up in a tough tiebreaker, the Aussie world No.49 ended up breaking the world
No.9 in game 9 and serving out game 10 to tear apart the higher ranked American and knock him out of the ATP Masters 1000 event.
Doing away with the world number nine, Tomic now moves on to the 3rd round of the Shanghai Rolex Masters 2011 where he will play either Albert Ramos or Alexandr Dolgopolov for a spot in the quarterfinal round.
