Bernard Tomic getting on with his tennis despite traffic charges – Tennis News
Australia’s top player, Bernard Tomic, still has traffic violation charges against him but he is enjoying his life and getting on with his tennis in spite of that.
The youngster did not have to appear against the prosecutor in a Gold Coast court on Thursday, as charges against him were postponed for two months.
In an episode which led to a confrontation with police, the 19-year-old has appealed that he did not cross over the double lines and fail to stop.
Magistrate, Gary Finger, deferred the case till 5th of June to allocate time for talks with police and Tomic’s lawyer, Chris Nyst, after proceedings at the Southport Magistrates Court on Thursday.
Nyst shared that Tomic was not disturbed by the legal proceedings. He said, "No, he's well. He's getting on with his tennis and I think he's enjoying life. The prosecution is expected to get some material to us so we can look at
it and then we have some discussions about whether there's any common ground or whether they think charges should proceed.”
The lawyer added, “That process has started but there's a long way to go. If the charges proceed he'll be defending them ... but of course we would hope the charges don't proceed," he said.”
Tomic is currently in Brisbane to play for Australia at the Davis Cup, second round tie against South Korea.
The world number 36 will be leading his team in the absence of former world number one, Lleyton Hewitt, who had to withdraw from the competition due to a foot injury.
Tomic will open for Australia on the first day of the tie, taking on South Korean number two, Min-Hyeok Cho, in the first rubber on Friday.
Australian team’s non playing captain, Patrick Rafter, shared that he has full confidence in Tomic and the upcoming star will do well at the competition.
Rafter said, "We are playing a team that is lowly-ranked. I see that as not a lot of pressure on Bernard at all.”
Tomic has won 10 out of 16 matches he has played this season. The Stuttgart, Germany born reached the round of 16 at the Australian Open, losing to former world number one, Roger Federer.
