Bernard Tomic insists he is satisfied with his performance at the London Olympics – Tennis News
Bernard Tomic’s campaign to win a medal for Australia came to a disappointing end, as he failed to clear the first hurdle of the tennis event at the London Olympics.
The Australian number one was beaten by Japan’s Kei Nishikori in straight sets 6-7(4), 6-7(4) in the opening round. The rising star from Australia was expected to give a better performance than this and he was himself hoping to
do a good job at his Olympics debut but he disappointed his fans.
However, to everyone’s surprise, Tomic was pretty happy with his performance after getting ousted in the first round of the biggest sports event of the world.
Talking to the reporters after the match, the Australian player said, "I thought I played pretty good. I didn't take my break point chances. I had four set points in the first and it would have been a different story if I had won
that. He played better than me today."
Tomic was quite pumped up before the start of Olympics. He had even said that he would be happier to win a Gold Medal at the Olympics than capturing a Grand Slam title. The 19-year-old had also termed Olympics as a fifth Major.
Giving an interview before the start of the mega event, the Australian star had said, "You can't put into words what winning a gold medal would mean. For me winning a gold medal is bigger than winning a grand slam. I can only dream
of it. It (the Olympics) is like a fifth grand slam and something I always wanted to do better at than grand slams."
Tomic has more burden on his shoulders, as he is the highest ranked Australian tennis player now. Since, Hewitt had been in and out of competitive tennis due to injuries for most part of the last couple of years, Tomic had been
carrying his country’s flag on the ATP World Tour.
Leading Australian side at the Davis Cup, Tomic has won all of his three matches for his country this year. He defeated Di Wu in straight sets 6-4, 7-6(3), 6-3 in Australia versus China Davis Cup tie at the start of this year.
Then, he won both of his matches against Korea, beating Min-Hyeok Cho and Jung-Woong Na in his first and second singles respectively.
However, his recent performance had already rang the alarm bells, as he had failed to win even a single match in the last five events he had participated.
