Bernard Tomic loses to Florian Mayer in the opening round – Shanghai Rolex Masters 2012
Australian hopeful, Bernard Tomic, continued to perform below his potential, going down at the hands of Florian Mayer of Germany in straight sets 4-6, 0-6 in the round one of the Shanghai Rolex Masters. This is the second last
ATP World Tour Masters 1000 event of the season and the Australian had a chance to win some points but he failed once again.
Tomic went neck to neck with Mayer in the first eight games, evening out the score at 4-4. However, the Australian failed to hold his serve in the ninth and could not pull it back in the subsequent one, losing the first set 4-6.
Mayer did not do anything special, hitting a couple of aces and merely 55 percent of the first serves. The German star converted 11 of the 17 first and 11 of the 14 second deliveries into points. The 29-year-old put away all the
four break threats he came across and availed one of the two chances he created in the opener.
Ranked 25th in the world, Mayer played near error free in the second set, as he did not allow Tomic to win even a single game, breaking the Australian three times and holding his entire serves to seal it 6-0.
Mayer required just 45 minutes to score this easy win over the Australian contender.
During the post match press conference, Tomic said, "Today I gave 100 percent in the first set. I felt in the second set, my 100 percent wasn't even close to where it should be.”
The Australian youngster added, “This year has been a little bit different. It's been defending points, defending stuff. I started feeling the pressure. I wasn't prone to pressure growing up, 16, 17. Now, I think it's starting
to hit me the last five, six months. It's costing me. It's been a massive road this year. I didn't plan my schedule as I should have and it's cost me a lot of matches that I probably should have won."
Mayer will lock horns with the third seed, Andy Murray of Great Britain, in the second round.
