Bernard Tomic ousts Brian Baker to reach pre-quarters – Western and Southern Open 2012
Australian number one, Bernard Tomic, took down the local wildcard entrant, Brian Baker, in straight sets at the Western and Southern Open 2012 on Tuesday. He juggled up a 6-4, 6-3 victory to progress into the third round at the Lindner Family Tennis Center
in Ohio, United States.
The Aussie teenager showed his brilliant agility to outrun Baker in their first encounter at this Emirates Airline US Open Series event. After earning the glory in one hour and 16 minutes, Tomic edged in the FedEx ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals)
Head 2 Head series by 1-0 against the 27-year-old and secured a place in the round of 16.
Tomic high-spiritedly entered this ATP Masters 1000 event. He blasted away all three breakpoints he came across to rule his entire service games. The Aussie cashed in the lone break point opportunity in the last game and clinched the opener with a 6-4 score
line.
Ranked 49th in the South African Airways ATP World Tour Rankings, Tomic carried his winning ways in the following set. He again blocked all three breakpoints he faced to keep his entire serves. The Aussie capitalised on one out of three break
chances in the eighth game and clicked the set with a 6-3 success.
The 19-year-old recorded his first back-to-back victory since May. He fired seven aces and manipulated a better first serve share of 63 per cent in contrast with the veteran’s 51 per cent. The Aussie also magnificently marked 38 out of 48 points on it and
sealed the deal with 70 points.
Tomic is most likely to face the 17-time Grand Slam champion, Roger Federer. The Swiss Maestro, who is coming off capturing silver medal at the London Olympics, will square off against Russia’s Alex Bogomolov in his opening match. He received a first round
bye after being a top seed at this outdoor hard court event.
In the only other second round clash of the day, fifth seeded Tomas Berdych dumped the Taiwanese qualifier, Yen-Hsun Lu, in straight sets to book this spot. The top ranked Czech star lost his serve once but capitalised on three out of seven break chances
to register a 6-3, 6-4 success.
