Bernard Tomic ousts Kenny de Schepper to enter round two – Barcelona Open 2013
Australian star, Bernard Tomic, rallied past the French qualifier, Kenny de Schepper, in a three-set thriller at the Barcelona Open Banc Sabadell 2013 on Tuesday. He nudged up a 6-4, 4-6, 6-2 victory against the French to secure a spot in the second round
at this ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals) World Tour 500 series held in Barcelona, Spain.
The Aussie showed tremendous skills to overpower de Schepper in their first encounter. After stealing the show, Tomic edged in the FedEx ATP Head 2 Head series by 1-0 against the world number 102 and progressed into the second round at this clay court tournament.
Tomic made a convincing entry into this match. He swiftly swiped his entire serves with poise. The youngster got the breakthrough in the seventh game and clinched the opener with a 6-4 score line.
The 25-year-old gave tough time in the proceeding set. He displayed brilliant defensive skills and bagged their entire serves. De Schepper got the coveted break in the last game and grabbed the equaliser by winning six games to four.
Ranked 47th in the Emirates Airways ATP World Tour Rankings, Tomic re-gained his strength in the deciding set. He got the desiderated break in the third game and took the initial lead. The Aussie squandered his serve in the very next game but
went berserk, eventually reeling the following four games. As a result the youngster pocketed the equaliser with a 6-2 victory.
All in all, Tomic manufactured a better first serve share of 72 per cent in contrast with his rival’s 59 per cent and amazingly clinched 46 out of 65 points on it. He withstood nine aces but took full advantage of four double faults the Frenchman committed.
Next challenge for the booming Aussie is the seventh seed, Juan Monaco. The Argentinean number two received a first round bye after being a seeded player in this event.
The Slovenian star Blaz Kavcic will join Tomic in the proceeding round. He devastated Colombia’s Alejandro Falla with a bagel to progress. Kavcic will face off the 15th seed, Marcel Granollers, in the second round.
