Bernard Tomic overpowers Carlos Berlocq in round one – US Open 2012
Australian number one, Bernard Tomic, got the better of the Argentinean star, Carlos Berlocq, in a four-set thriller at the Flushing Meadows 2012 on Tuesday. He penned down a 4-6, 7-5, 6-3, 6-4 victory against the world number 44 to power into the second
round at this last of the four Grand Slam event held in Corona Park in Queens, United states.
The Australian teenager made a poor start and lost the opening set. However, he found his rhythm afterwards and carved out the victory in two hours and 49 minutes. As a result, Tomic convincingly progressed into the round of 64 at this major hard court event
taking place form 27th August to 9th September.
The 29-year-old made a convincing start at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center. He failed to block the only breakpoint he came across but capitalised on two out of four break chances to bag the opener with a 6-4 success in 34 minutes.
Tomic re-focused in the proceeding set to prevail. He lost his serve once with a single breakpoint he came across. However, the Aussie cashed in half of the four break chances to clinch the set with a 7-5 score line in 42 minutes.
Currently ranked 43rd in the South African Airways ATP World Tour Rankings, Tomic maintained consistency in his game in the third set. He amazingly brushed off two out of three breakpoints he faced and broke the Argentinean’s serve twice to pocket
the set with a 6-3 win.
The 19-year-old kept momentum running in the follow-up set. He lost his serve once but capitalised on two out of five break chances, ultimately sealing the set by winning six games to four.
Up next for Tomic is the former world number one, Andy Roddick.
"I think it's going to be very big for me," said the Aussie youngster in an on-court interview about his next match up against the 2003 titlist. "I think I'm playing well. I think if I play well, the way I was playing today in the second and third set and
the end of the match, I can pull off the win."
The 20th seed trounced his qualifying compatriot, Rhyne Williams, in straight sets in just under two hours.
