Bernard Tomic prevails over Tim Smyczek in the second round – Delray Beach International 2012
Eighth seed Bernard Tomic continued his progress, beating Tim Smyczek of USA in straight sets, 6-1, 7-5, in the round of 16 at the Delray Beach International Tennis Championships in Florida, USA on Wednesday. The Australian required
only an hour and nine minutes to throw his opponent out of the tournament.
Tomic didn’t allow the American to settle down as he put pressure right from the start of the match. The Australian broke Smyczek in the second and fourth game, holding all of his serves to race to a 5-0 lead. The American succeeded
in winning the sixth to escape a bagel set. Tomic delivered some big shots in the seventh game to seal the set 6-1.
The 19-year-old gave a mixed serve performance, hitting six aces and also committing three double faults. The Australian hit 60 percent of the first deliveries, converting an incredible 13 of the 15 of them into points in the opener.
Smyczek made some amendments and provide better competition to Tomic in the second set. He didn’t allow the Australian to snatch a break in the first ten games, equalising the score at 5-5. However, the American failed to win even
a single point in the eleventh and was unable to convert a break point in the next to lose it 5-7.
The 6ft 5in tall, Tomic, pounded four aces and 75 percent of the first serves. The Australian went on to save all the seven break points and capitalised on one of the two he created in the second set.
The Australian has made an impressive start to the season. He reached the semi-finals at the Brisbane International, losing to the eventual champion Andy Murray 3-6, 2-6. The right-hander upset higher ranked players, Fernando Verdasco
of Spain and Ukrainian Alexandr Dolgopolov, on his way to qualifying for the fourth round at the Australian Open. Though, he was beaten by former world number one Roger Federer in straight sets 4-6, 2-6, 2-6 and could not reach the last eight.
Tomic is pitted against top seed, John Isner of USA, in the quarterfinals.
